About the Species
Male turkeys, also known as toms or jakes, average 16 to 22 pounds while female turkeys,
also known as hens or jennies, average about 8 to 12 pounds. Males boast large, fanning
tails and females have duller plumage with less prominent features. Male turkeys will
court females in groups, though only one of the males gets to mate. Hens will lay
about 10 to 12 eggs, usually one egg per day, over a period of about two weeks.
